about

collapsing/the brightness is a purposeful step away from the usual bright and sunny Chalk Portraits, and into a more contemplative sound. collapsing/the brightness was written during a period of anxiety and depression.

"collapsing/the brightness" is two overarching movements – "collapsing", which ends after the distortion swell around 14:15; and "the brightness", which runs to the end. The entire piece is meant to melt into itself, slowly shifting toward an end that does not mirror the start. It wants to go home, but has left itself worlds away and simply sits down to rest in the dark.

"pushing everyone away" is a remix of the "collapsing" portion of the original piece by Dave Brenner of Gridfailure. I hesitate to even call what Dave did a remix, as he nailed exactly what I was looking for in a unique way – take the "panic attack" portion of this piece and make it an absolute nightmare. The piece deserved a new name, as simply calling it a remix felt unfair to the amazing work Dave did.

As always, thank you for listening and support Chalk Portraits. It's good to be back.

Oh, and one more thing – collapsing/the brightness is only on Apple Music and Tidal. I absolutely refuse to support Spotify and their horrible business practices any longer. Sorry to all you Spotify listeners out there, but Daniel Ek is a monster and he's not getting another second of music from me until things change.
