A Place for Ash

David Fischer While I do not yet know whether I prefer Dreaming in a Dead Language or A Place for Ash, this is an absolutely stunning and remarkably well-written black metal album. Not only does it sound even better (not! polished, but fittingly natural with a sharp, raw edge) than its predecessor, it sports a particularly engaging songwriting quality. From the unorthodox start of Penance to the atmospheric, epic and yet crushing, self-devouring closer this album keeps getting better the deeper one's in. Favorite track: The Beast that Mourned at the Heart of the Mountain.

Ippocalyptica The astonishing Dreaming in a Dead Language might have been Mo'ynoq's once-in-a-career capturing of lightning in a bottle, but make no mistake, A Place for Ash is very much a sonic whirlwind that evokes all of the same emotions and employs the same weapons. The counterpoint on display here is masterful! I think that Mo'ynoq has more to say now than ever, with a broadly expressive progressive black metal tapestry, but is simply doing so in a less kinetic and muscular manner than before. Favorite track: Effigies Adorned in Fire.

mourner This is an absolutely stellar release. I consider myself lucky when I was lured into their pummeling sonic labyrinth once again. And again and again... Brutal, emotive and hypnotic. Flat-out breathtaking 🖤 Favorite track: The Beast that Mourned at the Heart of the Mountain.
